How to Choose the Right Metal Outdoor Furniture
If you are in the market for new outdoor furniture one of the first decisions you’re going to have to make is wood versus metal. Depending on your choice of décor, and the style of your patio, lawn or garden you may have already made this decision. While you might think that wood designs are more stylish, and metal more resistant to weather, this is not necessarily the case. Certain woods have a natural resistance to insects and rotting, while wrought iron has arguably been the choice material for the gardens of the high-to-do for centuries. Metal can provide everything from style, to durability, to easy mobility, making it a great option for your outdoor furniture.
Types of Metal Outdoor Furniture
There are three metals often used to make outdoor furniture: aluminum, iron and steel. Each has its benefits and detractors, and it’s important to understand both sides of each before making a decision.
1. Aluminum – Aluminum is a very affordable and lightweight metal. If you plan to bring in your patio furniture after each use, aluminum is a great option because it is so easy to lift. Of the three material choices being discussed here (aluminum, iron and steel) aluminum will be the cheapest, so if you have a low budget aluminum is once again a great fit for you. On the other hand, since aluminum is so light weight it is easily dented and damaged. If you live in a harsh, wet weather climate like Florida for example, and you’re planning to leave your outdoor furniture outside, aluminum is not the best option as it gives way to rust and corrosion easily and it can be blown away by high winds.
2. Iron – Wrought iron has been used for centuries in the elegant gardens of nobles and members of high society from Europe to the United States. Iron is incredibly sturdy, which is both a benefit and a detractor. On one hand, iron will last and will certainly withstand accidental damage and harsh weather. You certainly will not have to worry about your iron furniture blowing away during a heavy storm. On the other hand, moving iron outdoor furniture is a daunting task. Iron furniture will be a more expensive, due to its durability and classic, elegant style. However, it will still need regular maintenance and upkeep to prevent corrosion.
3. Steel – The obvious benefit of stainless steel is its ability to withstand rust and harsh weather. Stainless steel will also be very heavy, making it durable and stable through rough weather, but hard to move and rearrange otherwise. The chic and sleek look of stainless steel will give your patio a very modern and classy appeal that will last for years. Unfortunately, steel can be much more expensive than other options.
The variety of options for metal outdoor furniture assures that you’ll be able to find something that meets your needs and budget. As I stated earlier, metal is durable and long lasting, to keep it looking new you can always clean and refinish your metal outdoor furniture to make it match any setting or style. Hopefully, these outdoor furniture tips can help you find the product that is right for you.
