Discover the Comfort of Hammocks
The hammock was introduced to western culture by Christopher Columbus who encountered them during his interactions with natives in the new world in the mid 1500’s. The invention of the hammock, however, predates Columbus by at least two thousand years. The hammock’s longevity is a testament to its versatility and comfort.
Hammocks are ideal pieces of outdoor furniture; they are easy to move, resistant to weather, and provide a perfect setting for relaxation or romance. By being suspended off the ground they are perfect for tropical locales where the ground might be too hot, too wet, or too dangerous for sleeping.
Tribes that live in the jungles of South America have been sleeping in hammocks for centuries to keep them safe from dangers lurking on the forest floor. Campers, travelers and even military personnel have also adopted this technique. For example, submarines used to employ hammocks to bunk sailors in order to conserve room.
Hammocks come in many unique designs; from fabric, to canvas, or traditionally, braided rope. Some hammocks are not as mobile as others, encumbered by the addition of a spreader bar or hammock stand to accommodate hammock-lovers who lack access to trees for support. If you’re looking for a comfortable and unique companion for your pool furniture or patio furniture, lack of mobility may not be an issue. With a stand or spreader bar it is also very easy to remove the hammock without having to move the base. A hammock also simplifies the process of cleaning outdoor furniture, and your pool or patio area because it is elevated off the ground.
For the avid outdoorsman who is not looking for a relaxing day by the pool, many companies do offer camping hammocks. Bed hammocks are also available for indoor use.
Be aware that hammocks take up more space than you may think. A 7 foot hammock is sure to be 13-14 feet in length. The length of the hammock only includes the usable area; it does not include the support ropes on either side. Make sure the place you have in mind for your new hammock has plenty of room for not just the hammock, but the ropes as well.
