When it comes to picking out wood outdoor furniture for your back deck, garden, or patio, the choices can often be overwhelming. In addition to the many different styles and designs available, there are several types of wood available, each of which has its own specific characteristics, giving it a number of benefits not found in other types of wood furniture. If you’re looking for quality and beauty wrapped up in one fantastic piece of furniture, nothing beats teak.

Teak is a type of wood native to the forests in Southeast Asia; however, due to overlogging, most teak furniture is made from wood harvested from teak farms. It is incredibly durable, and over time, as it’s exposed to air, it turns a rich brown color. Teak is incredible weatherproof, and can withstand all forms of inclement weather, such as rain, wind, snow, and extreme heat. As such, teak can last upwards of 100 years. It can even potentially last longer if coated with what is known as a Spar Varnish, though this is not necessary. It’s naturally resistant to termites, and due to its low maintenance requirements, is often used in boat decks, doors, window frames, and even columns.

One of the downsides to plastic or wrought iron furniture is that if it’s left outside in extremely hot weather, it becomes extremely hot itself. As a result, it becomes too hot to sit on, rendering it effectively useless. Teak, on the other hand, won’t absorb as much heat, and the heat it does absorb is evenly dispersed, making it comfortable to sit on during those hot summer days.

In addition to being weather resistant and having an incredibly long life, teak won’t cause metal to rust or corrode. Finally, teak wood furniture is rather heavy, which means that you don’t need to tie it down or drag it inside on those blustery days when the wind just simply won’t cooperate. For further durability, you want to make sure that th teak you get is heartwood and not sapwood, as it;s naturally durable and stable.

Whether you’re looking for a beautiful and long-lasting picnic bench or just a couple of chairs so you and your significant other can watch the sunset on a warm Fall night, teak furniture gives you the best bang for your buck in terms of durability and comfort.
